Texas Flavor Shines Bright in a National Food Contest
Everything’s bigger in Texas — even the creativity. Chera Little (@cheralittlefood) of New Braunfels brought bold Lone Star flavor to the national stage this month, earning second place and a $1,500 prize in the Prairie Fresh® & Pickle Contest. Her winning creation? Pickled Pork Sausage Dogs with Sweet-Dilly Corn Salsa — a dish that’s as playful as it is delicious.
A Fresh Take on Comfort Food
Known for her home-cooked innovation and approachable style, Little impressed judges with her bold, layered flavor approach. She blended Prairie Fresh pork sausage with sweet-dill relish, pan-seared it to perfection, and gave it a quick pickle-juice bath for tenderness and tang. Then she topped each sausage dog with a fresh corn salsa featuring jalapeños, red onion, cabbage, and a cilantro-dill drizzle for brightness and crunch.
With pickles trending across TikTok, Instagram, and restaurant menus, her dish captured everything Texans love — bold flavors, creativity, and heart.
The Pickle Craze That’s Sweeping the Nation
Prairie Fresh®, a premium pork brand known for its flavor and quality, launched the “Prairie Fresh & Pickle” Contest to celebrate one of the year’s biggest food trends: pickles.
In 2025 alone, Google searches for “pickle” jumped 3,800% (Mother Murphy’s trend article). Meanwhile, 63% of consumers worldwide shared positive pickle content on social media (Seattle Times article). From gourmet pickle chips to briny cocktails, the pickle boom shows no signs of slowing down.
How Prairie Fresh Turned a Trend into a Movement
To celebrate this craze, Prairie Fresh invited home cooks, food creators, and fans to showcase how pickles can elevate pork dishes. The goal: highlight pork’s versatility while inspiring fans to play with craveable, briny flavors.
Entries ranged from smoky ribs with spicy pickle slaw to tenderloin tacos topped with sweet-heat pickle chips — each showing imagination and appetite for innovation.
Where Food Meets Social Media
Recognizing the role of social media in today’s food trends, Prairie Fresh hosted the contest on Instagram, where food content dominates the feed. The hashtag #Food appears on over 250 million posts, and 38% of users view food content daily (MenuTiger, 2025).
In 2025, posts mentioning “pickle” or #Pickle exploded — generating over 6.2 million engagements and reaching 134.9 billion people (Talkwalker). Clearly, pickles have gone viral — and Prairie Fresh tapped into that momentum perfectly.
Bringing Home the Bacon (and Pickles)
The contest drew thousands of entries and nationwide attention. For Prairie Fresh, it was more than a competition — it was a celebration of creativity, community, and flavor.
“The creativity and enthusiasm from those who took part has been incredible,” said David Eaheart, Senior Director of Communications & Brand Marketing for Prairie Fresh. “This competition highlights not just the versatility of our products, but how the pickle trend continues to inspire culinary innovation. It’s been exciting to see home cooks turn simple ingredients into dishes full of heart and originality.”
Chera Little’s Sweet-Dilly creation proved that when it comes to flavor, Texas always brings its A-game — and maybe a jar of pickles, too.
